Cartoon: Image is Everything
by Rob Portlock

This image reminds me of something James Twitchell writes in Shopping for God:
"Megachurches concentrate on what makes the brand powerful: growth. What you sell is the perception that whatever it is that you are selling is in demand."

Is it just me, or do I find the facade in the cartoon a little too emblematic of what we call the American Church...all image, and yet little to any substance.

Oh, come on. It's just leadership by the power of suggestion. The statement of the congregation's aim is also the means for achieving it.

The comic is funny because we are so stupid to replicate this reality in so many ways decade after decade with no change. Will God reward a postureing faith that is chained to external appearance?

I find this interesting because a friend told me recently 'My son thinks I'm out of touch and he keeps telling me that "Image is everything"' So the church buys into the prevailing cultural values?
