Tuesdays with Tozer–Simplicity
Seeking Christ in an age of complexity.
I’m struck by the fact that Tozer wrote these words in 1948–more than 60 years ago. Was he ahead of time? Or is the craving for simplicity a constant one? Are there always distractions and busyness–whether you’re living in the 1970’s, the 1700’s or 700 BC?

Every age has its own characteristics. Right now we are in an age of religious complexity. The simplicity which is in Christ is rarely found among us. In its stead are programs, methods, organizations and a world of nervous activities which occupy time and attention but can never satisfy the longing of the heart. The shallowness of our inner experience, the hollowness of our worship, and that servile imitation of the world which marks our promotional methods all testify that we in this day, know God only imperfectly, and the peace of God scarcely at all.If we would find God amid all the religious externals, we must first determine to find Him, and then proceed in the way of simplicity.
–A.W. Tozer (The Pursuit of God, p. 17-18)
God, help me to embrace the simplicity of faith you intended for each of us. Help me to come to you like a child, open-armed, fully-trusting, and experience the wonder of your embrace. In Jesus Name. Amen.

"If we would find God amid all the religious externals, we must first determine to find Him, and then proceed in the way of simplicity." That's worth tweeting.

Love Tozer!! I post on him often. I too am amazed at how he seems to be describing our current times in much of his writings.

I've been reading Tozer for years, can't get enough of him. Two other favorites you might like is Charles Spurgeon and Francis Schaeffer.
Being in a place of brokeness before Him you will learn the secrets of The Most High God.
He longs to teach us and fellowship with us, but sadly too many are not in love with Him. Their flesh is still clinging to them as filthy rags.
People are not being taught The Old Paths to walk in them.
We need to get back to the basics, study The Scriptures and ask for His insight.
He has made it so simple that a child can understand and be saved.

Salutations.
As I go to church, week after week, I cannot help but echo the sentiment. More than that, I feel it. I find myself looking for answers in the Bible, which lately has led me to Neil Cole's approach for simple fellowships, simple discipleship and simple church.
Is it truly the answer, or at least a valid one? Or does it throw up the baby with the bathwater? Time will tell. I just know I cannot be happy with Church-ianity any longer. Christ wants more from me and from my walk with my siblings in the faith.

Sister Margaret:
Appreciate Tozwer's observation regarding our need for greter "simplicity."
It reminded me of the K.I.S.S. Priniciple
-- "Keep It Simple, Stupid!" -- used often to clairify matters which have become far too complicated.
Concerned that the word "Stupid" is much too negative, some years ago I modified the K.I.S.S. Principle as follows. "Keep It Simply Successful" or "Keep It Simple and Successful." Either of these latter two phrases I believe accurately reflects the positive point Tozer is offering us now.
Rock on A.W.!!!

I believe truth is timeless. No matter what age you live in, if your heart longs for intimacy with God, you can't help but feel the apathy of religion that surrounds you. My heart breaks for those who are satisfied by the knowledge of God instead of knowing God intimately. However I find it most disquieting when I come to a realization that I myself have become complacent in my relationship with Him. Thankfully, the realization always leads to brokenness and a deeper intimacy.
