Stupid Church Tricks: Mary & Joseph in Bed

How many theological and cultural taboos can one billboard violate?

This one comes from New Zealand (a.k.a. Middle Earth). A church wanted to start a conversation about the Christmas story, but it created a controversy with a billboard featuring Joseph and Mary in bed together. It read: "Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow." Listen to the vicar's explanation for the billboard. Yeah, it makes no sense to me either. I would have loved to have been in the church meeting where this idea was approved.

Well, first, I want to applaud the vicar for not doing something that would have A: Hurt someone, or B: Damaged property.

As for lampooning...um...hmm, considering what most non-christians mutter about the whole "G-d did what what to a fourteen year old girl?" makes it rather unseemly that the vicar actually puts that whole viewpoint in art.

Probably not a good idea.

If you have to explain the message then it's not a good advertisement. It is most likely a result of "groupthink". Take it down and start over, Vicar.

When are we going to see the post about the Christian Leadership blog that thought it was a good idea to regularly post the worst ideas from churches around the world?

I miss the substantive posts that used to run here.

This is art?

Had I seen this without knowing the background, I would have thought it was someone mocking the faith.
