Stupid Church Tricks: Suing for Bad Online Review

A mom learns if you can't say something nice about a church....

Pastor Charles O’Neal of the Beaverton Grace Bible Church is suing a former attender for writing a negative review of his church online. After a bad experience with the church, Julie Anne Smith decided to share her impressions. "I thought, I’m just going to post a review,” Smith said. “We do it with restaurants and hotels and whatnot, and I thought, why not do it with this church?”

The pastor claims Smith’s review amounts to defamation. He is suing Smith, as well as her daughter and three others, for $500,000.

UPDATE: For the church's side of the story, read a statement from their website.

1 Corinthians 6:1-7

1 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6 But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers! 7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

what a wretched testimony.

As in most stories there is another side of this tale. Here is Beaverton Grace Bible Church side of the story. bit.ly/MT92EB

I really think you need to update this story. As Will pointed out with his link, this is not a lawsuit based on a visitor simply posting a review. It's a response to several years of harassment from former church members.

The only purpose in posting this story is to mock this church for what seemed to be a silly lawsuit, when the decision to move forward was what they describe as "painful" and for which they have a well reasoned and thought-out explanation.

I never heard of this church until you posted this, but if I had simply moved on without Will's comment, I would have had a very cynical view of the pastor and the church members based solely on what you wrote.

Please update your story. It's the right thing to do.

I third the motion. The title and body make this sound like a cut-and-dried lunatic church after an innocent former congregant. What would you do if a group of people accused you of gross offences against your own children which were later proved false, then engaged in an online campaign to slander your church and your ministry across multiple platforms for 3 years?

Interesting points, everyone...makes me wonder what Y'shua would have done if he decided that he would not put up with the false accusations, outright blasphemous behavior, and libelous statements of mankind 2k years ago.

Makes me wonder what state we would be in now?

The whole argument only confirms that the word church as it is found in the NT is wrong as it is in Matthew 16:18. The word being translated as church is wrong. There has never been a church of the Lord Jesus Christ. The word is ek klee sian being the ones is the ones invited out from among the ethnoon where the ethnee were scattered by my father and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against HER. She is not an IT and her name is not the church. Paul never wrote to a church nor was he an apostle to the heathen gentiles. The church has always been for the purpose of deceiving the heathen gentiles to thinking that they can be saved. The church has never existed in the mind of God. Jesus came only for the lost Sheep of the House of Israel and they are the Hebrews that were divorced in the Old Testament and redeemed in the New. There has never been a dog or a snake converted to a hebrew. The heathen gentiles have been rejected from the beginning. The heathen church has always persecuted the ethnee the lost sheep of the House of Israel. See Galatians for an explaination of the bondswoman and her son. The child of promise was perscuted by the son of the flesh. the Church has always been the son of the flesh no matter what you have read or what you think is written in the corrupt English Text. The ekkleesia is not the church and never has been. Salvation is by race and race alone for the Hebrews of the House of Israel. No gentiles mentioned ever being converted to a hebrew in the last 2000 years. All the effort to christianized the world is wrong for it will never happen only the ethnee will be ruling over the ethnoon gentiles. The new covenant has not yet been given and when it is it will be given to the house of Judah and the house of Israel Heb 8:8. If the church is suing for a bad report then it deserves to be sued it self for false representation of the word of God by the hebrews of the house of Israel. The church is the biggest cult of all, deceiving the heathen gentiles into believing that they can be saved from a live of rebellion which came from their father the devil.

Real sad situation whichever way you look at it. Psalm 37 says "GOD will make your justice shine like the noonday son" Quite recently this scripture came in handy when I was faced with a tough situation that I had to make a decision for that may have been viewed from people (outside of those who know me) to reflect poorly on my character. However I made what I believed to be the right choice and found that God DID defend my name AND my reputation and once I left it over to Him, things worked out better than they probably would have if I defended or justified myself (tempting as it sometimes was.) I actually dont know the full story from this church and so it's true that we dont have the full account here but in my own recent trial I found that God was really great at defending me and because I trusted Him, He made sure that the REAL truth came out. :)

The title of this post is ridiculous. Please tell us that you only hastly read one side of the story before posting this. Please, in the future get into the habit of investigating both sides before passing judgement. And before you say that no judgement was passed, the title speaks for itself. Another, more appropriate, less judgemental title might be "Church Runs Out Of Patience And Sues For 3 Years of Defamation Attempts"

This article really is a shame; even after the update, the article seems to mock the hard decision of the pastor and church. The article itself reminds me of the Bereans, who we are told heard the message and matched what they heard against scripture. While some may consider that to be apples and oranges, I don't think it is. Something with a large a following as Out of Ur should be a little more diligent in finding out all facts before hitting the publish button. Or was this just supposed to draw attention strictly from shock value?

I agree that this article is extremely misleading, starting with the title. Christian journalism should be held to a higher standard than the world's but this article is not doing that. It seems that one side only was reflected here. No side should be prefered.
